// House of Fraser is soon to cease trading in Wales as it closes Cardiff branch
// The grade II listed Howells building is closing after 150 years to be repurposed into a mixed-use development

House of Fraser is set to close its Cardiff branch as investors plan redevelopment of the grade II listed building.

The store, located inside the Howells Building, is currently displaying “Closing Down – extra 20% off” signs as well as selling store furniture, mannequins, and store decorations.

A date is yet to be confirmed but is likely to happen sometime next month, WalesOnline reports.

The departure from the Welsh capital will see the retailer close its last remaining store in Wales.

The building first opened as a Howells department store in 1849 before it was bought by House of Fraser in 1972 and rebranded in 2010.

Investment company Thankeray which bought the retail landmark last year recently unveiled plans for a multi-million pound mixed-use redevelopment.

Last month, the retailer ceased trading in central London as it closed its Westfield London store.

The recent store closures will see the retailer left with about 30 shops in the UK – almost half the number it had before Ashley snapped up House of Fraser out of administration in 2018.
